Efraín Goldenberg Schreiber, or "Efraím," served as Peru's finance minister, foreign relations minister, and prime minister in the 1990s.
Efraín Goldenberg was born on December 29, 1929, in Lima, Peru, to Russian Jewish immigrants to Peru. He grew up in Talar, the only Jewish student in his school, and studied in Colegio San Andrés (formerly named as Anglo-Peruvian School).[1]
He studied humanities and law at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima from 1946 to 1952. He then entered the family export business. He was on the board of the Lima Jewish Community Association.[2]
On February 17, 1994, he was sworn in as Prime Minister of Peru by then President Alberto Fujimori, a position that he held until 1995. He was Peru's foreign relations minister prior to this office (August 28, 1993-95).[3][4][5]
On October 10, 1999, he became Peru's Finance Minister.[6]
He has had a prominent role in the business community as chairperson of the National Fisheries Society and director of the Fund for the Promoting of Exports.
